First livestream kit for a small church
Seat count, room length, one-volunteer workflow, and what to skip, before you open a cart. This is for a volunteer AV lead or pastor-tech at about 50 to 200 seats, not a broadcast engineer.

Seat count
Under about 150 seats, one solid 1080p PTZ and a simple path into the stream usually beats a 4K wishlist. You are buying reliability on Sunday, not a brochure.
- ~50–100 seats, one volunteer: One back-wall PTZ with presets, a clear audio path for the pastor, and either OBS on a laptop or a small hardware switcher. Multi-cam can wait.
- ~100–200 seats, one or two volunteers: Still start with one good PTZ. Add a second camera only when someone can run it without wrecking the first.
- Larger rooms: Distance and zoom matter more than megapixels. Do the throw math before you shop 4K bodies.
The second-camera decision (trained operator, locked wide, or a fixed music frame) is When a small church should add a second camera.
If the room is small but the camera sits far from the pulpit, treat it like a long room. Seat count is a starting point, not a purchase code.
Room length
Camera on the back wall? Match zoom to tracking distance. Marketing “20x” only helps if the body can fill a face from your throw.
For many sanctuaries the default body is the PTZOptics Move SE 20x: 1080p, presets, built-in tracking, HDMI/SDI/USB/IP, and a warranty churches actually use. Short rooms can use 12x. Balconies or deep sanctuaries may need 30x.
Budget Amazon PTZs (FoMaKo, Tenveo 20x) can work when money is tight. Hold them until you decode the exact SKU name, warranty, and who answers the phone on Saturday. Meeting-room bars (Logitech Meetup) and handheld or mirrorless bodies (Canon Vixia, Sony ZV-E10) are different tools. Close-range AI trackers (OBSBOT Tail 2) are not a substitute for a back-wall 20x.
Move 4K is the same idea in 4K. Hold it if you only deliver 1080p to YouTube or Facebook.
Side-by-side: PTZ cameras for small churches compared.
One-volunteer workflow
Pick the path that survives a late substitute, not the path that looks cool in a YouTube rack tour.
- USB into a laptop + OBS: Lowest skill floor. One PTZ (or a single HDMI camera through a capture box) into the computer. Good when one person already lives in OBS.
- HDMI into a hardware switcher: Default for a fixed sanctuary once you want buttons and less laptop drama. The usual buy on this site is the ATEM Mini ladder; Pro ISO is the common sweet spot for record + stream.
- All-in-one (no laptop): YoloBox when portable or “no PC in the booth” is real. Hold it versus ATEM when the room is fixed and volunteers already like hardware buttons.
- Capture card only: Magewell (and similar) when you need HDMI into a laptop for OBS/SRT. It is not a switcher. Buy it for that job, then stop.
- PoE + NDI: Useful later. Not the first Sunday. Needs network, firmware, and someone who will own it when it breaks.
When that later job is real, and when it should wait: When NDI is worth it for a small church.
When to leave OBS for a hardware switcher, stay in software, or use a capture card: When a small church should buy a hardware switcher.
The HDMI length from that back-wall camera to the booth is Sanctuary cable run: about 25 ft of Premium HDMI, 50 ft Active HDMI, or fiber when copper fails.
Pastor audio before pretty cameras. A clean speaking mic into the stream mix beats a second camera every time. The pastor-mic path into the computer is Audio first on Sunday.
- First lav under about $400: BLX14/CVL (one channel is enough for most first kits).
- Wired handheld everyone already knows: SM58.
- Step up when RF or channel count bites: SLX-D (stay in Shure) or EW-D (Sennheiser digital).
- Always XLR into a mix, then into the stream: House mixer + stereo USB dump: MG-XU; Board already exists: Scarlett (2i2 default).
What to skip
- 4K for a 1080p stream: Hold Move 4K
- Conference cams on sanctuary back wall: Hold Logitech Meetup
- Handheld/mirrorless as “PTZ”: Hold Canon Vixia and Sony ZV-E10
- Close-range AI as wall PTZ: Hold OBSBOT Tail 2
- No-name PTZs with thin warranties: Hold FoMaKo / Tenveo until support is clear
- Ceiling mics as only pastor feed; dual lavs day one; NDI-first install; wrong mixer (Scarlett vs MG-XU)
Starter stacks
These stacks track current recommend and hold verdicts on this site. They are not a ranked shopping list. Confirm the cart on each SKU page.
Good (first Sunday)
| Piece | Listing | Why it is here |
|---|---|---|
| PTZ | PTZOptics Move SE 20x | Default back-wall 1080p PTZ |
| Switcher | ATEM Mini Pro ISO | Fixed room, record + stream |
| Pastor lav | BLX14/CVL | First wireless under about $400 |
| Mix into stream | MG-XU if you need FOH, or Scarlett 2i2 if the board already exists | One clean dump into the laptop or stream box |
Better (RF is the problem)
Stay on the Good camera and switcher. Step pastor wireless to SLX-D (stay in Shure) or EW-D (Sennheiser digital) when BLX is maxed.
Skip (unless the job is real)
Move 4K, Logitech Meetup, Canon Vixia, Sony ZV-E10, OBSBOT Tail 2. FoMaKo and Tenveo 20x stay hold until SKU, warranty, and Saturday support are clear.
Portable / no-laptop alt: YoloBox (hold vs ATEM in a fixed booth).
Next Sunday checklist
- Measure the throw from the back wall to the pulpit. Pick 12x, 20x, or 30x from that number.
- Choose one path: USB + OBS, or HDMI into an ATEM.
- Put a pastor mic on the stream mix before you buy a second camera.
- Set three presets: wide, pulpit, music stand.
- Open the SKU page and confirm today’s cart. Prices here go stale.
- Do not buy the hold list unless that exact job is real.
