When NDI is worth it for a small church
A decision page, not another cart. The default for a small church is HDMI or SDI, plus presets. NDI is a network. It is not the first Sunday, and it is not a reason to buy a different camera.
The solo cart is one volunteer Sunday. Buttons versus OBS is When a small church should buy a hardware switcher. The HDMI length is Sanctuary cable run. Throw, seats, and the skip list are First livestream kit for a small church.
Street prices live on the SKU pages and go stale. This page does not add a street total. Confirm the cart. No affiliate links on this site.

The default is HDMI or SDI, plus presets
One back-wall PTZ. Three presets: wide, pulpit, music. The picture lands on a switcher or a laptop the volunteer already understands. That path is HDMI or SDI. You do not turn on NDI to make Sunday work.
PTZOptics Move SE already does HDMI, 3G-SDI, USB-C, and IP at the same time. NDI HX3 is native on current firmware. Older reseller copy that says “paid upgrade” is stale. You still do not have to use NDI. Plug HDMI into an ATEM Mini, or stay in the software the booth already runs. That cut decision is When a small church should buy a hardware switcher.
IP on that page (RTSP, RTMP, SRT) is not NDI. You can ignore both and use HDMI. PoE plus NDI needs a PoE switch (802.3af on Move SE) and a firmware check. That is not the first Sunday.
Move 4K also speaks NDI HX3, with no paid license. Hold that body if the stream is 1080p. It wants PoE+ (802.3at). An 802.3af injector that runs a Move SE will often leave a Move 4K with no picture. NDI in the headline is not a reason to step up to 4K.
Side by side: PTZ cameras for small churches compared.
When NDI can wait
Wait when the room is still this shape:
- One volunteer runs Sunday. They already recall presets. They do not also own a network.
- One back-wall PTZ in a fixed sanctuary. The cable is HDMI or SDI they can label and test on Saturday.
- The picture they have already works. Nobody is fighting it.
One volunteer Sunday already keeps NDI, bonding, and a firmware surprise off that person’s list. A second camera is a labor question before it is a protocol question. Read When a small church should add a second camera. Do not start NDI because a locked shot showed up.
A long HDMI run is still a cable decision. About 25 ft of Premium HDMI is enough. Longer copper wants Active HDMI. Hold fiber AOC until copper flakes, EMI is real, or code wants plenum. That page is Sanctuary cable run. Length alone is not an NDI project.
When NDI might be worth it later
NDI can earn a place after the HDMI or SDI path already works, and only when a person will own the network the morning it breaks. One of these is already true:
- The camera-to-booth path is long, and there is no conduit. You are not going to pull another HDMI or a fiber run. A wired Ethernet drop is the path you can actually add. Power, control, and the picture can share that drop only if the switch is the right PoE class. Measure that before you buy a camera for the protocol.
- You already have more than one camera, and the booth is turning into a pile of long HDMI cables. A network path can replace that pile. It does not cut the show. The cut is still ATEM Mini or the software you already run. Four HDMI inputs on Pro ISO cover a PTZ, a locked camera, and slides. You do not buy NDI to avoid learning the buttons.
- The building already has a managed gigabit switch, and someone on the team already owns it. They can say which switch, which port, and who gets the call when PoE drops the camera. Wi-Fi in the lobby is not an owner.
If nobody can name the switch, you do not have an owner. Stay on HDMI or SDI.
An encoder is a different box. Magewell Ultra Encode fits when a switcher you already own does not stream and you need SRT or NDI HX. Pro Convert is full NDI ingest. Hold that box unless you are deliberately building a full-NDI fabric. Move SE already does NDI HX3 on firmware for many rooms. YoloBox Extreme includes NDI. Skip Extreme unless five to eight HDMI sources, or free NDI, are real. NDI on Pro or Ultra is an extra license. It is not a reason to buy the family.
What to hold or skip
- An NDI PTZ first, to future-proof the cart: hold. That includes BirdDog X1. Buy the camera for the picture, the presets, and the warranty. Move SE already has NDI HX3 on current firmware. Use HDMI or SDI on Sunday. Leave the protocol off until a later reason above is real. Do not pick a cheaper body because the title says NDI.
- Consumer Wi-Fi NDI: skip. A home router, a mesh pod, or a phone hotspot is not a Sunday path. NDI wants wired gigabit that someone owns. The picture stutters, discovery fails, and the person who also starts the stream cannot fix it during the welcome.
- Mixing NDI model strings: skip the checkout until the string matches the protocol you think you bought. FoMaKo and Tenveo sell several carts under similar names. The strings are in the next section. If a volunteer cannot read the model out loud and match it, do not buy it on Saturday night.
- NDI on day one in a one-volunteer room: skip. Presets and a labeled HDMI cable beat a new network.
- A new full cart: skip. The dated carts already exist on one volunteer Sunday and under ~150 seats. This page does not add a third total.
Cameras on this site that mention NDI
BirdDog X1 is the NDI-first PTZ on this site, and the verdict is hold. These other live pages already say what the protocol does on a body you buy for the picture.
- BirdDog X1. Hold. The P200 is no longer in manufacturing. The current HD bodies are the X1 (20x) and the X1 30x. NDI HX2 and NDI HX3, HDMI, USB-C, and Wi-Fi. The Ethernet port on the comparison table is 100 megabit, not gigabit. No SDI. Do not buy it to future-proof a network. Move SE already has NDI HX3 you can leave off and use HDMI.
- PTZOptics Move SE. Recommend for most small churches as the back-wall body. HDMI, 3G-SDI, USB-C, and IP together. NDI HX3 is native on current firmware. PoE is 802.3af. PoE plus NDI is not the first Sunday.
- Move 4K. Hold when you only deliver 1080p. NDI HX3 is native. No paid license. PoE+ is 802.3at. An 802.3af injector that runs a Move SE will often leave this camera dead.
- FoMaKo. Hold. FMK20UH NDI is the default budget body: HDMI, USB 3.0, and LAN with NDI. No SDI. FMK20SDI Pro is the SDI cart. NDI is an upgrade on that body, not included. Do not pay for NDI twice.
- Tenveo 20x. Hold. VHD20H is the default: HDMI, USB 3.0, and LAN. No SDI and no NDI. VX20M-N is the cart with 3G-SDI and NDI HX2. VL20N is a conference-shaped sibling. NDI on that line is a variant, not the base cart.
- OBSBOT Tail 2. Hold as a sanctuary PTZ. It is a close-range tracker, not a back-wall 20x. NDI HX3 is advertised. Confirm the license is in the exact cart. Do not assume the base body is already licensed.
Compare PTZ cameras puts the FoMaKo and Tenveo strings in one place. Read that before you mix carts.
Honest verdict
Recommend HDMI or SDI, plus presets, for a small church on day one. One back-wall Move SE. One volunteer. A fixed sanctuary. NDI can wait.
NDI might be worth it later when you will not pull another HDMI or fiber and there is no conduit, when several cameras would each need another long HDMI, or when a managed gigabit switch is already in the rack and someone owns it.
Hold an NDI camera bought first to future-proof the cart, including BirdDog X1. Skip consumer Wi-Fi NDI. Skip a FoMaKo or Tenveo checkout when the model string does not match the protocol. Skip an X1 checkout when the cart says 30x or Ultra and you have not read the string.
Dated carts, not a new total: one volunteer Sunday and under ~150 seats. Buttons versus software: When a small church should buy a hardware switcher. Cable length: Sanctuary cable run. Second camera: When a small church should add a second camera.
