When a small church should buy a hardware switcher

A decision page, not another cart. A hardware switcher beats OBS or Wirecast when a late substitute needs a lit button. If the same volunteer already lives in OBS and will be the only operator, hold the ATEM.

The solo cart is one volunteer Sunday. Seat-count shopping is the under ~150 cart. Throw, seats, and the skip list are First livestream kit for a small church. The second-camera decision is When a small church should add a second camera.

When ATEM Mini Pro ISO beats staying in software

Buy the ATEM Mini Pro ISO when a fixed sanctuary has two to four HDMI sources and a person who is not the usual operator has to start the stream. They press a lit camera button. They do not hunt for a scene in OBS or Wirecast. Record plus stream. Cut bus after one rehearsal.

That is path B on one volunteer Sunday. Side by side: compare switchers.

Pro and Pro ISO have four HDMI inputs. That covers a PTZ, a locked second camera, and slides. You do not need the eight-input ATEM Mini Extreme until the camera count is actually that high. That page is a hold. When a second camera is even the question, read When a small church should add a second camera before you buy a bigger switcher.

The HDMI still has to reach the booth. Length is Sanctuary cable run. Pastor mic into the mix is Audio first on Sunday. A switcher does not fix a dead lav.

When to stay in OBS or Wirecast

Stay in the software you already run when all of this is true:

Then hold ATEM. The money belongs on the camera or the pastor mic, not a second way to cut. One volunteer Sunday calls that path A: USB plus OBS.

Software-only is a hold path. Keep it when that one operator is the booth. Leave it when a first-Sunday substitute needs lit buttons. OBS and Wirecast are not listings on this site. Do not shop a software SKU to solve a button problem.

A capture box is not the same decision. If HDMI has to enter the laptop you already trust, that is the Magewell path below, or Cam Link 4K when you do not need a loop. If there is no PC at all, that is YoloBox.

When the Magewell capture path fits

Magewell is not a switcher. It has no cut-bus. Hold the family as a first switcher.

Buy USB Capture HDMI Plus when HDMI has to enter a laptop that is already running OBS. That is the capture path. It does not give a substitute a lit button.

Buy Ultra Encode when a switcher you already own does not stream and you need SRT or NDI HX.

If the job is buttons, buy ATEM Mini Pro ISO. If a cheap USB path already works and nobody is fighting the capture, skip Magewell too. The family verdict on this site stays hold.

Elgato Cam Link is the same laptop job as Magewell’s USB Capture, at the volunteer end of the cart. The current dongle is Cam Link 4K. One unencrypted HDMI in, USB 3.0 out, into OBS. Hold it. It does not cut cameras, and Elgato’s spec table does not list an HDMI loop.

Buy it when the booth is already a laptop in OBS and a confidence-monitor loop is not required. Buy Magewell USB Capture HDMI Plus when that HDMI must also feed a monitor.

Cam Link Pro is not that dongle. It is four HDMI inputs on a PCIe card for a Windows desktop. It is not dual HDMI, and it does not plug into a laptop. Elgato listed it out of stock on 2026-09-22. Do not buy Pro to solve a laptop OBS path.

If the job is buttons, buy ATEM Mini Pro ISO.

When YoloBox fits

Hold YoloBox against ATEM in a fixed booth that already likes hardware buttons.

YoloBox fits when the room is portable, there is no PC in the booth, or you want a vertical social stream plus a horizontal church stream and you do not want a laptop. Ultra is the buy inside that family. The family verdict on this site stays hold.

Hold Pro. B&H has discontinued it. Skip Extreme unless five to eight HDMI sources, or free NDI, are real.

A YoloBox does not replace an OBS booth that one operator already runs well. It also does not replace ATEM when the substitute only needs a lit camera button in a fixed room.

The other all-in-one hold is the Roland VR-6HD. Six HDMI inputs, an onboard audio mixer, and a direct LAN stream. That is a different workflow from a lit ATEM button. The page verdict stays hold. ATEM Mini Pro ISO stays the usual buy.

What to hold or skip

Honest verdict

Recommend ATEM Mini Pro ISO when a fixed sanctuary has two to four HDMI sources and a substitute needs lit buttons.

Hold ATEM when one volunteer already lives in OBS or Wirecast and is the only operator forever. Keep the software path. Do not add OBS or Wirecast as listings.

Hold YoloBox until the room is portable, there is no PC, or you want vertical plus a horizontal church stream. Ultra if you buy one. The family stays hold.

Hold Magewell until the job is HDMI into a laptop running OBS, or encode after a switcher that does not stream. It is not the cut-bus.

Hold Elgato Cam Link when one HDMI camera must enter that same laptop and a loop-out is not required. Cam Link 4K is the cart. It does not replace Pro ISO.

Hold Roland VR-6HD when the ask is an all-in-one audio mixer plus a direct LAN stream. It does not replace Pro ISO.

Dated carts, not a new total: one volunteer Sunday and under ~150 seats. Boxes side by side: compare switchers. Second camera: When a small church should add a second camera.
